SA eID Tag Discount Update

What Sheep and Goat Producers Need to Know (June 2025)

South Australian sheep and goat producers received a welcome update this June: the Electronic Identification (eID) Tag Discount Program has been extended for another two years, through to June 30, 2027. But there are a few important changes that all producers—and tag buyers—should be aware of.

Here’s everything you need to know about the updated SA eID rebate, including new discount rates, eligible tag colours, and how it affects your upcoming tag orders.

🔁 Program Extended: July 2025 – June 2027

The South Australian Government has officially extended the Sheep and Goat eID Tag Discount Program for another 24 months. This means producers can continue receiving discounts on eligible NLIS-accredited eID tags from July 1, 2025, to June 30, 2027.

💲 Updated Discount Rate: 50% Reduction Starting July 1, 2025

While the program continues, the discount amount is changing:

  • Until June 30, 2025: $0.95 (ex GST) discount per eligible eID tag
  • From July 1, 2025: $0.475 (ex GST) discount per eligible eID tag

This reflects the government’s plan to gradually reduce financial support as the industry transitions to full eID implementation.

🎨 Eligible Tag Colours (YOB System)

The eID rebate program in South Australia follows the national Year-of-Birth (YOB) colour system, ensuring consistency across states.

PeriodEligible YOB Tag Colour
Until December 31, 2025White
January 1, 2026 – December 31, 2026Orange
January 1, 2027 – June 30, 2027Light Green

✅ To qualify for the rebate:

  • Tags must match the correct YOB colour for the period.
  • Tags must be NLIS-accredited and from an approved manufacturer (e.g., Allflex Australia).
  • Tags must be used for birth-year identification, not for post-breeder use.

💡 Reminder: Pink post-breeder tags and non-compliant colours are not eligible for the rebate.

🛒 No Paperwork – Just Buy Eligible Tags

The best part? No extra forms or applications needed. The rebate is automatically applied at the point of sale by approved suppliers, so producers with a valid PIC (Property Identification Code) can enjoy the discount instantly when ordering compliant tags.

🚜 Why the Rebate Matters

The South Australian Government continues to invest in easing the transition to mandatory eID tagging. This extension supports producers with reduced costs, while nudging the industry toward long-term compliance.

However, with the discount rate halving, it’s a good time to:

  • Plan ahead for 2026 and 2027 tagging needs
  • Order early to take full advantage of the rebate
  • Double-check tag colours before ordering to ensure compliance
